We have some sad news indeed: Ginny Wadsworth died on Monday night, unexpectedly. Ginny was a long-time member here, and a big part of the social life of the club. We truly offer our condolences to Ginny's son, Kim, who worked at the club for years, and to her daughter, Christina, sister, Tish, and the rest of her family. Club member, Bob Bradford, wrote an email to many of Ginny's friends informing us of her death. In the email, Bob told us about seeing Ginny recently. We thank Bob for letting us print the email here on the website. Plans for services have not yet been finalized.

Labor Day Loometh, and on this Labor Day, as usual, the club will host its GIGANTIC round robin/barbecue/pot-luck jamboree. There will be pick-up doubles all day, food, and drink. (Maybe we will roast a giant zucchini.) The club, as usual, will supply beer and tonics, hot dogs, hamburgers, Smart Food, and chips, and if the weather is not too hot, a turkey or two, and some made-from-scratch chocolate chip cookies. If you haven't been to one of these jamborees, come see what you've missed and why so many club members forsake the Vineyard for the club.

The new entranceway is pretty much complete. It's sturdy. It's ornate, no? And it's worth the trip from the Vineyard just to stroll through the gate. You'll feel like kings and queens.

The carpenters have packed up and left.

Truckloads of power tools go a-way.

(People ask why the construction took so long. Take a look at the entranceway: the work is very intricate.)

Racquet stringing returns to the club... by way of Mike Zaisser. Mike offers next day service, low prices, and professional quality work. Drop your racquet off at the club, or call Mike at 617 780-1907.

Some tournaments have been cancelled. The Tennis Committee reports that tournaments without minimum numbers of entrees will not be held. The tournaments that will take place are:
  • Senior Mixed Doubles on 9-11 and 9-12;
  • Mixed Doubles on 10-2 and 10-3;
  • Men's Doubles on 9-25 and 9-26.

When the draws are made up, we'll try to post them here quickly.

Speaking of tournaments, we know that some club members do very well in tournaments at other clubs and leagues. We hear that Jessie Von Hippel and Esther Williams are members of a team called The Super Tie Breakers and have won the N.E. Sectionals. They will soon be off to Kansas City, of all places, to play in the Nationals. Go Jessie and go Esther.

Also, the U.S. Open has started. (We recommend channel surfing between the Red Sox and the Open. De-compress after watching so many hours of the Olympics.) Here's a link to the official site. Did anyone catch Serena on tv the other day, extolling the virtues of the Open and NYC? The Open, the Republican Convention all in one week! Followed by Fashion Week!

Rick Rose's fabled doubles clinics are up and running. Even when the club is otherwise deserted, the clinics are well attended and big fun. They take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Check them out.

Take a look

at what was happening at this time last year. (Sorry, this newspage played for a long while last year.)

We are leaving previous tournament draws up. And again we'll offer our thanks to our Anonymous Friend, the Java Kid, for posting them and keeping them up to date.

And here's the saga of last year's tournaments (so's we can compare and contrast):

And the saga of the year before (we're mighty fancy here, and mighty grateful to the Java Kid for doing all this work):

Phew.

Here's a link to the espn site, with pro ranking.

And a club member (let's call him Sol) suggests a link to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. The site is rich.

As noted,the CTC book for 2004 is available. Much of the information in the book may now be found here on the website. The information is current. The waiting list for membership, as well as a list of new members is up to date. That information can be found through the 'FAQ' page. The Activites Page (round robins, tournaments, etc) is also up to date. The Rules page is also up to date and we have been urged to urge our readers to "review the rules and refresh their memories on some of the finer points."

'Members', and' Reservation Requests' are not active parts of the site nowadays. 'Timelines' is for adepts.

The Yearbook link will take you to the last newspage from 2003. From there you can see the whole of the Persistant Archive of last year's news.
